Route
To see the exact route and details, check out the Komoot route for this hike:
Car to Walchensee
90 minute drive from Munich
The route starts at the huge parking lot right by the Walchensee.
Heimgarten
At around 12:00 we reached the Heimgarten peak.
From the peak we could already see our next path across the ridge to the Herzogstand:
Ridge walk
At 12:40 we ended our break and headed towards the Herzogstand.
Some parts of the path are quite steep; you really have to think about your next step, and sometimes you need to use your hands as well.
But overall, the ridge walk isn’t too difficult and is built out well with steel cables to hold on to in many places. We encountered people of any age, from 8-year olds to well above 60.
The views were great: In the north, you’re looking at all the lakes; in the south you can see the Bavarian and Austrian alps.
Herzogstand
At 14:00, we reached the Herzogstand. Looking back towards Heimgarten, we had an amazing view of the path that we had just walked.
Berggasthaus Herzogstand
About 1 km from the Herzogstand is the Berggasthaus Herzogstand, where we took a break and had lunch.
The descent through the larches with the sun shining down on us was pretty hot, but easy to walk.
Walchensee
After getting back down to the Walchensee at around 17:00, we jumped into the lake to cool off.
